Emily,

War veterans seem to live on every block in Birmingham. But, I would say it's a State of Michigan custom to honor veterans. On MI license plates, identification at the bottom tells in what conflict they served.

Hannah- I think it is extremely interesting that even though you decided Memorial Day was not for you and your husband, you still did something to honor those who have died.

Leonard- I did a quick Google search to check the size of Birmingham, Michigan and the town I live is about the same in population yet nothing of that magnitude happens here. Does Birmingham has a long history of military service?

I spent Memorial Day morning in downtown Birmingham, MI. At City Hall an inspirational Memorial Day service included patriotic music, speeches and readings by war veterans, placing of wreaths, and reading the names of American casualties from the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Taps ended the program.

If your community doesn't hold a program or service, ask your community to plan and sponsor one in 2011. As an American Jew, we should show our pride for service personnel who fought in wars in our behalf.

I took this to heart. My husband and I talked about how this day is not for us, but for those who gave their lives for us. We are enjoying the day, but we did head down to Mount Zion's cemetery for lovely service that helped us honor the dead. It was short and very meaningful. I highly recommend people use a temples memorial service as one way to make this day more meaningful.

That video of everyone stopping in Israel was powerful.
