Author Archive for Hal Senal

As a writer, I've always held an unbridled passion for the Entertainment Arts. Movies, TV, and music are my raison d'être. Having written for three alternative newsweeklies, in Omaha, NE, where I'm originally from--I now live in North Mankato--many of you will come to find that I have a very conversational, no-holds-barred approach to my writing style. In other words, yes, some of you dear readers may be shocked and offended by what I say and how I say it. Ultimately, though, my intention is to leave you wanting to know what I have to say next! So, enjoy the ride!! It's gonna get pretty wet and wild, from here on out. But please, no Speedos. Thank you.

Debut Album from Cities Band, Cold Open, Is Simple, Sweet…but a Little Lukewarm

It’s as though the band wanted to give everyone a heaping helping of what could be considered as the musical equivalent of comfort food: Easy on the ears, but lacking any sort of substance, kick, or nutritional value.

diaTribe Review: Pomerantz’s “Rich Boy” is Entertaining Debut, But Nothing Nouveau

That’s not to say the book isn’t entertaining as hell. I mean, yeah, it’s completely derivative of books, similar in theme (anyone here of a little-known author named F. Scott Fitzgerald? Nah. Me neither.) that came before it, but it’s still a fast read. In fact, it’s a total page-turner. I couldn’t wait to see what happened next—even if I already had an idea. Long story short: It’s just fun.

diaTribe Reviews: The Tale of the Dueling Jewish Books!

There is no universal way to be a Jew. It is what you and yours make of it.

Can!!Can in all of their shrill, inane glory!! Notice there's no view of the audience...if there is one.

diaTribe: Can!!Can, Quite Simply, In Any Way, Shape, or Form…Can’t!

After listening to Can!!Can’s Monsters & Healers, not only did I want my ears to melt off, but I felt as though I needed some healing myself.

diaTribe Review: “Funnyman” Is One Big Schnor–er–Snore

It’s sad that the most interesting parts of ‘Funnyman’ include everything and everyone except the central character, who, well, is pretty much anything BUT that!

diaTribe: There’s Nothing Strange About This “Fruit!”

Our review of The Wailing Wall/Jesse Rifkin’s new album “The Low Hanging Fruit,” with its crystalline, soulful lyrics, spirituality and just plain trippy soundscapes.

diaTribe: The (Jewish) Empire Strikes Back!

I can’t tell you how tired I was of Jews, in TV and movies, being portrayed and/or seen as timid victims. Jewish people, despite what Woody Allen and, sometimes, Spielberg, might display in their films, are, in actuality, cunning, agile Jedi Knights.
