It’s Your Turn: This Sunday, Help Defeat the “Marriage Amendment” with the Jewish Community
This is a guest post by Madeline Harms, an unaffiliated Jewish graduate student working with JCA to defeat the marriage amendment.
The Jewish Community is rallying to defeat the upcoming “Marriage Amendment” to the Minnesota Constitution that would restrict marriage to a man and a woman (despite an existing law that already restricts marriage in this way). The Minnesota Rabbinical Association, Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas, Jewish Community Action, and most recently, the United Jewish Fund and Council of St. Paul have come out against the amendment.
Now it’s your turn.
Come to Adath Jeshurun synagogue on the afternoon of March 4th for a rabbi-led text study and interactive dialogue that will give you the tools you need to convince family, friends, colleagues, and community members to vote NO. In order to defeat the amendment, we need EVERYONE who believes that marriage is a fundamental human right to come to the polls this November and vote NO. We need your help to get them there.
What: “Just Vote No, Make History: Defeat the Marriage Amendment”
When: Sunday, March 4, 2012, 2:00-5:00pm
Where: Adath Jeshurun Congregation, 10500 Hillside Lane W, Minnetonka, MN
The event is organized by Jewish Community Action (JCA) and co-sponsored by Adath Jeshurun Keruv Committee and a variety of other local synagogues and Jewish communal organizations. For more information contact Adele Brown at adele@jewishcommunityaction.org or 651.632.2184 or Charlie Nauen at 651.646.2217 or cnnauen@locklaw.com.
Get Inspired! Take Action! See you there!

“…rabbi-led text study and interactive dialogue…”
Judging from the reactions so far, that’s going to be quite a “dialogue”.
Check out this article on MinnPost’s Blog Cabin opining about this issue, and whether there is a “Jewish Community” view on this issue – http://www.minnpost.com/minnesota-blog-cabin/2012/03/jewish-community-inclusive-all-views
Finally – some intellectual honesty from my opposition.
I attended the farce. Two JCA apparatchiks got defensive with me when I asked for a halakhic justification. I emailed a Rabbi about it, and he emailed me back with a link to the Rabbinical Assembly responsum.
