Sarah, very well done. Although the article was primarily about how we deal with cultural stereotypes and interact with people who are unfamiliar with Jews, it was also a LITTLE bit about hair. Just had to share what my curly haired daughter got me hooked on five years ago- Devachan products and stylists. Threw away the straightening iron and embraced the curls. Its all in the product and haircut. Here is a link to find a Deva-trained stylist near you:
http://www.mydevacurl.com/curly_stylist_finder
In the Twin Cities, the curly hair master is Teresa Johnson at East 42nd Street Salon, on 48th and Nicollet in Mpls. At the risk of making her so busy that I won't be able to get an appointment myself anymore- I'll just say that I have sent a lot of people to her because I get asked about my hair all the time. Hope this is useful info!

I have often been the only Jew in the room, whether it was growing up in Chicago, or living in Northern California. One of my happiest experiences was when my daughter became best friends with a girl from Iran, and our family was embraced by hers, and vice versa. One of my saddest experiences was when a neighbor I had lived next door to for three years used the expression "Jew you down".

I'm fairly comfortable explaining Jewish culture and basic religion to Gentile friends, and usually don't mind, as I think most people just don't know or are unaware (I'm reminded of an acquaintance saying "really? You don't believe in Jesus?")

I'm not as comfortable joking around about cultural cheapness, etc. unless the friends are good ones. I sometimes feel that if you say something, it confirms for people what they think, and before you know it, they're all "yeah, why are you all so cheap?"
