If you told me a couple years ago that I would start an online dating site for Jewish moms to set up their kids, I wouldn’t have believed you. If you told me that through that site I would meet my girlfriend, I probably would have laughed in your face.
But here I am today, six months into an amazing relationship with a girl I met through TheJMom.
I’ll never forget the moment I realized my mom was better than me at picking out girls for me to date. My sister Danielle and I were checking out a dating website one day. When I left to run errands, my mom, Barbara, asked if she could sift through profiles for me. By the time I got back a couple hours later, she had jotted down a list of 10 potential dates—I was pretty impressed! She had put more effort and time into the process than I ever could or would and she enjoyed doing it.
Later that same week, we found out that our cousin Michael had proposed to the girl he had been set up with by his mom. Maybe there was something to this matchmaking mother concept–maybe moms know something we don’t?!
And so the idea for a different kind of Jewish dating website—TheJMom.com—was born. A site for Jewish moms—or any close relative or friend—to match their single children up on dates with other Jews.
Now, I know what you’re thinking—this must be the set up for a bad Jewish joke. But this really works! In the little over a year since the site launched, more than 2,500 moms have joined the site, more than 5,000 messages have been sent, resulting in hundreds of dates. There’s even been one marriage!
And then, of course, there’s my own story. One day, Danielle and I were giving a talk about TheJMom at a Chicago area synagogue. One of the moms came running up to me after we finished to tell me I just had to meet her daughter Gillian. First, she’d have to sign up for the site, I told her, to see if my mom approved. Literally two days later, my mom called me to tell me she found a really cute girl in Chicago from a family just like ours. Our moms made the match, we started talking and went out on our first date.
And here we are, six months later, proof that moms really do know best.
So for all you singles out there, just give it a try, hand over the computer to your moms and let them work their magic and fulfill their Jewish mother fantasies—you may just be our next success story.
And for all you moms out there searching for your child’s beshert, TheJMom just might be the answer.
