Ilana,

I would just like to throw out there that while tzniut tends to be most commonly noticed in its applications toward women, the rules of modesty in dress and general appearance actually do apply to men, as well. It's just that in our society, the men are less noticable when they follow it.

For instance, many Haredi (ultra-orthodox) men do not wear shorts or sandals without socks, or ever short sleeve shirts. I realize that a guy with a long sleeve shirt, long pants, and shoes on doesn't exactly stand out nowadays, but nevertheless, they do have, and abide by, those rules. It can be pretty noticable in Israeli beach towns, for instance.

Just wanted to throw this out there, so people don't think this is a complete "let's just obsess with women's bodies" set of rules. There is a large element of that, to be sure, but it's not the whole picture.

Ilana,

Love the tips - 99Lollipop is getting some of my business shortly.

As for Mr. Koufax in 1965 - every synagogue within 50 miles of the Twin Cities claims to have hosted him for Yom Kippur services. The evidence actually points to him sitting in his hotel room all day and waiting out the storm.

Be on the lookout for my Yom Kippur piece - I think you might like it!
