Great review - I can't wait to see this production!

It's not surprising that the Emile character sounded operatic - Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote the songs for the original Emile, Ezio Pinza, a famous Metropolitan Opera star. The part is almost always played by an opera singer. This does sound very different from the other characters, but serves to highlight the difference between the American characters and the very cultured Frenchman. Both Pinza in 1949, and Paolo Szot, the Brazilian opera star who played Emile in this 2008 Broadway revival, won the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical.
