First of all, I think that my grandchildren are extremely fortunate to have you as their father and primary parental influence.

Second - To me, the essence of what you wrote is - What is of primary importance in this existence? That we connect to the commonalities of religion and community? Or that we make a difference while we're here? Are they mutually exclusive? Or are they easily connectable?

Third, if your actions are based in goodness and a caring for humanity, you do not need to seek acceptance for your actions from God, the community, or your children.

Lastly, to the throat-clearing Chabad I say that if God had chosen to continue the world for another year based on humanity's acceptance of God as a ruler, we would have all disappeared long ago.

Jason, you make me proud.

my new tradition is that I dropped out of Temple altogether in order to spend more time w/ my immediate family - someone of an oxymoron, huh? but if I can cut out Hebrew and religious school hours and transmit the values I adhere to, and the joy of being together as family outside an institutional setting, it's a win in the coming year, and in the longrun most likely.... (:

I certainly recognize this is not popular with the masses, but you'd be surprised at how many people have told me they'd like to do the same....
