A new Chabad is launching in Eden Prairie with a goal of bringing Jewish life closer to suburban families through accessible neighborhood programming.
Rabbi Schneur, a former associate rabbi in Seattle, and Sheina Matusof, a previous educator, will lead Chabad Eden Prairie. The idea came to the couple in April, as Chabad leadership looked to expand engagement into the Minneapolis suburbs.
“There are a lot of Jews in these suburbs,” said Rabbi Matusof, describing his many conversations with residents. “We’re looking to see if we can engage Jewishly on a multi-local level.”
The couple explained that rather than establishing another synagogue, EP Chabad is focused on creating accessible programming that is local and family-centered.
For example, this Rosh Hashanah, families will have the opportunity to gather at a local park for apples and honey and the blowing of the shofar. There will also be a Rosh Hashanah dinner on Sunday the 13, designed specifically for families.
The couple said they are letting the local community help determine the direction of this Chabad.
“We wanted the direction to be guided by the local community,” they said. “We want people to feel passionate about what the future for them might hold or what they want for their children.”
This approach is also one of their biggest challenges thus far. They are encouraging residents to see themselves as participants rather than attendees.
“We’re looking to mobilize those that are here and say, ‘You’re a part of the community,’ said Rabbi Schneur. “This isn’t us. This is you.”
The couple emphasized that Chabad EP will welcome all Jews, regardless of their religious observance.
“We are proudly observant, and we’re here to teach that in whatever way we can,” the rabbi said. “But there’s no price of entry.”
While Chabad EP is not currently planning to have regular prayer services, Rabbi Matusof is open to leading informal prayer sessions if there is an interest from community members.
For now, the focus will be on meeting people, building relationships, and hearing what Jewish families in the area want from Chabad EP.
“The most exciting part is the anticipation of where it is going to go,” said Sheina Matusof. “Everybody else’s excitement has been really special.”
They hope that this excitement will continue to grow as more people realize they aren’t the only Jewish families in their neighborhoods. Chabad EP will be posting on social media platforms as they plan programming.
