Adath Reads: The Adath Book Club
Our next Adath Reads Book Club will feature Kaaterskill Falls by Allegra Goodman. The book club will meet on Zoom on Sunday, August 2, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. RSVP to [email protected] to join
This is Goodman’s first novel, and it is set in a summer retreat of a close-knit Manhattan Orthodox community. The protagonist, a young wife and mother, experiences the judgment of her community when she opens a kosher market. This book was the finalist for the National Book Award in 1998 and it was chosen as a NYT Notable Book the same year. This “Jewish beach read” was recommended by one of our book club members. We were inspired to select it because of the recent success of the Netflix series Unorthodox. We hope you enjoy this opportunity to glimpse into the (fictional) lives of an insular Orthodox community. What surprises you about this community and their interactions with one another? How do women find success, both personal and societal, in this community?
