CASTE: The Origins of Our Discontents, Isabel Wilkerson Discussion Group

Are you ready for a deeper dive? Join fellow Beth El thinkers, ponderers, debaters and readers as we explore the book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson. As described by Wilkerson, Caste is a “fixed and embedded ranking of human value that sets the presumed supremacy of one group against the presumed inferiority of other groups on the basis of ancestry and other immutable traits”, like skin tone or religion. Wilkerson discusses three major caste systems throughout the book: India, Nazi Germany, and the United States. Can and should the racism and xenophobia and antisemitism that plague the United States best be understood and changed through the lens of caste?

Our group will meet over Zoom for 7 discussions between October 2021 and January 2022, covering one section of this book each time, on the following dates:

Thursday, October 14 from 7-9 pm: Introductions and Section 1
Thursday, October 28 from 7-8 pm: Section 2
Thursday, November 11 from 7-8 pm: Section 3
Thursday, December 2 from 7-8 pm: Section 4
Thursday, December 16 from 7-8 pm: Section 5
Thursday, January 13 from 7-8 pm: Section 6
Thursday, January 27 from 7-9 pm: Section 7

We will read, understand and discuss the arguments that Wilkerson sets forth, and explore and discuss the actions each of us and the Beth El community can and should take to heal ourselves and our country. Facilitated by Nancy Gildin.

Please join us in spirited discussion. ALL are warmly welcomed; pre-registration is required.
