A Way of Happening, a Mouth: On Petition and Repetition in Baqqashot

(Or, When the Best Translation Isn’t Exactly a Translation)

Poet and translator Peter Cole will speak about his formative encounter with the singing of Baqqashot in Jerusalem’s Bukharan Quarter, and the impact it had on his sense of what might happen when words and music meet.

Peter Cole’s new collection of poems, Draw Me After, will be published this fall by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Cole has received numerous honors for his work, including an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature, a National Jewish Book Award, and a MacArthur Fellowship. He divides his time between Jerusalem and New Haven.
