Dialogue with the Divine: Galeet Dardashti on Piyutim, Judaism’s Sacred Song and Poetry

The Rimon Artist Salon Series opens its sixteenth season on November 13, 7 p.m. with “Dialogue with the Divine: Galeet Dardashti on Piyutim, Judaism’s Sacred Song and Poetry” at Mount Zion Temple (1300 Summit Avenue, St. Paul). Musician David Jordan Harris joins vocalist and scholar Dardashti in conversation about the power of piyutim to immerse its participants in a soulful encounter with a musical tradition both ancient and contemporary. The tradition of Jewish liturgical poems called piyutim dates back at least 1400 years and continues as a creative channel of expression into the present moment. Piyutim reached an especially high level of excellence in medieval Spanish Hebrew poetry as composed by stellar writers such as Shelomo Ibn Gabirol, Yehuda HaLevi, and Moses, and Abraham Ibn Ezra. Piyutim have enjoyed a recent resurgence in Israel’s musical culture where their potency has proven to transcend time and place and to find a home in hearts both secular and observant.

Admission is $12 ($6 for ages 36 and under)

N95 masks are required to attend this event, which is co-sponsored by Mount Zion Temple.
