Jo Ivester presents Never a Girl, Always a Boy

Jo Ivester will speak about her award-winning book, Never a Girl, Always a Boy, describing what it was like raising her transgender son in a world not quite ready to accept. Jeremy, now 33 years old, had top surgery at 23 and began hormones and changed his name and pronouns a year later. Through sharing Jeremy’s and the family’s coming out story, Jeremy and Jo hope to build awareness, believing that through that increased awareness, Jeremy and others like him will find acceptance. Jeremy’s voice in the book is based on videos he recorded while building the courage to move forward.

Never a Girl, Always a Boy received starred ratings from Kirkus Review and the Library Journal; Kirkus ranked it as one of its top 100 indie books of 2020. It has been recommended for Young Adult readers by the American Library Association. It was included in USA Today’s 2020 list of the top 10 LGBTQ books to read during Pride Month, and in Parade Magazine’s list of the 24 best memoirs of 2020.
