SUMMARY:Music\, Memory\, and Resistance: A Book Talk with Dr. James A. Grymes
DESCRIPTION:Internationally renowned musicologist James A. Grymes discusses his National Jewish Book Award–winning book Violins of Hope\, a powerful account of violins played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust. The book also tells the story of Israeli violinmakers Amnon and Avshalom Weinstein\, who restore these instruments and the histories they carry. Grymes explores how the violin served as a lifeline in ghettos and camps—preserving dignity\, sustaining resilience\, and\, in at least one case\, helping avenge murdered family members—revealing why\, wherever there were violins\, there was hope. Q&A follows\, with a reception and book signing to conclude. \nThis event is presented as part of the Minnesota JCC’s People of the Book series. \nCLICK HERE to reserve your spot \nFor the safety and security of all JCC patrons – any non-member guest attending an event at one of our Minnesota JCC campuses will need to show a valid US ID (Drivers License or Passport) to access the facility.

SUMMARY:World Premiere Performance: Alex Lubet\, Amy Levy: Songs of Love and Loss\, for mountain dulcimer and mezzo-soprano
DESCRIPTION:Register for this event https://z.umn.edu/AmyLevyRSVP\n\nDate: Tuesday\, May 19\nTime: 7:30 p.m.\nLocation: Minnesota JCC Sabes Center\, Minneapolis (4330 Cedar Lake Rd\, Minneapolis\, MN 55416)\n\nAbout the Event:\n\nAmy Levy: Songs of Love and Loss\, a new musical composition for mezzo-soprano (Victoria Vargas) and mountain dulcimer (Alex Lubet) by University of Minnesota Center for Jewish Studies faculty member Alex Lubet\, receives its worldwide premiere performance at the Minnesota JCC Sabes Center on May 19\, 7:30 pm. The premiere performance also features internationally acclaimed University of Minnesota pianist Timothy Lovelace. \n\n\nAmy Levy was a 19th century Anglo-Jewish lesbian poet\, novelist\, and essayist\, much admired in her lifetime by Oscar Wilde and many others. The second Jewish woman at Cambridge University and the first at Newnham College\, Cambridge—where she experienced considerable sexism and antisemitism– Levy’s literary output explored the early feminist ideal of the “New Woman\,” insisting on greater independence for women and the removal of behavioral constraints. While there has been a resurgence of interest in her work since the 1990s\, owing largely to feminist scholars\, Lubet’s composition is the first professional musical setting of her poetry. \nMezzo-soprano Victoria Vargas\, a member of the University of Minnesota faculty\, has sung over twenty-five roles for the Minnesota Opera and has performed with the Opera Theater of Saint Louis\, Chautauqua Opera\, Sarasota Opera\, Ash Lawn-Highland Festival\, and many others. Her concert credits include performing with the Minnesota Orchestra\, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra\, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra\, Chautauqua Symphony\, and more. Well known for creating new roles\, Ms. Vargas will premiere in 2026 the world premiere of the opera Ofrenda with Austion Opera\, and will sing the role of Baba in The Medium with Opera Carolina. She has placed seven times at the formerly-titled Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions at both the district and regional levels. \nUniversity of Minnesota Center for Jewish Studies and School of Music faculty member Alex Lubet has composed and performed in many idioms and across a wide range of influences. A multi-instrumentalist\, his more recent emphasis has been instruments of American folk and vernacular cultures\, transcending their customary styles and techniques. Since 2015\, his focus has been on mountain dulcimer\, for which he has created a “new music” repertoire with many extended techniques and over seventy-five tunings. His works have been heard on six continents\, and he has concertized in North and South America\, Europe\, and Asia. Recognized for his use of music to both document and create cross-cultural journeys\, including encounters between Jewish music and other traditions\, Morse Alumni Distinguished Teacher Professor Alex Lubet has taught composition at the University of Minnesota for many years while also teaching local communities about Jewish music. \nTimothy Lovelace is a pianist and conductor whose performances have taken him to Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall\, the Kennedy Center\, Merkin Concert Hall\, Chicago’s Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts\, and series presented by major American orchestras\, including the Minnesota Orchestra and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. As a soloist\, he has appeared with the Minnesota Orchestra under Osmo Vänskä. For thirteen years\, he served as a staff pianist at the Ravinia Festival’s Steans Institute. An advocate of contemporary music\, he has performed and premiered works by leading composers. Lovelace is head of the Collaborative Piano program at the University of Minnesota. \nReviews of the recording: \n“A bold artistic choice….Lubet coaxes sounds from the simple instrument that sometimes shimmer gently like a lute\, and at other times wail rawly like a blues guitar.” \n“Victoria Vargas brings these verses to life with a powerful yet vulnerable mezzo-soprano voice that cuts through each word with glassy precision.” (Am:plified Mag) \nThe music “breeds a soundscape that wraps itself around you and takes you on these immense musical journeys and emotional pathways.” (Recording Artists Guild) \nPresented in partnership with the Minnesota JCC\, The Center for Jewish Studies\, and The School of Music at the University of Minnesota. \n\n\nPlease submit accommodation requests at least 2 weeks (14 days) before the event date. Requests received after will be accommodated when possible but cannot be guaranteed.

SUMMARY:Violins of Hope - Through the Lens of Hope: An Artist Talk with Daniel Levin
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of photography and memory with photographer Daniel Levin\, featuring an exhibit reception\, artist talk\, and book signing for Violins and Hope: From the Holocaust to Symphony Hall—winner of the 2022 Independent Publisher National Book of the Year. Levin is the first photographer to document\, in extraordinary depth\, the Tel Aviv workshop of Amnon Weinstein and the hauntingly intimate process behind the Violins of Hope—a mission to restore instruments that survived ghettos and camps even when their owners often did not. Through luminous photographs and compelling stories\, Levin invites us into a world of craft and devotion\, tracing how these violins were brought back to life and carried onto stages around the globe. Today\, the work continues through Amnon’s son\, Avshalom Weinstein\, ensuring these instruments remain living witnesses—sounding with resilience\, remembrance\, and human dignity. \nReception and book-signing with Daniel to follow in the Tychman Shapiro Gallery. \n \nFor the safety and security of all JCC patrons – any non-member guest attending an event at one of our Minnesota JCC campuses will need to show a valid US ID (Drivers License or Passport) to access the facility.  \n  \n

SUMMARY:From Synagogue to Church: A Shared North Side Story
DESCRIPTION:What: From Synagogue to Church: A Shared North Side Story \nWhen: Sunday\, May 31st | 3-5 p.m. \nWhere: First Church of God in Christ – Graham Temple | 810 Elwood Ave N\, Minneapolis \nThis year marks the one hundredth anniversary of a storied North Minneapolis building with a unique and intersecting history: now the religious home of First Church of God in Christ\, the building was first built as a synagogue for an Orthodox Jewish congregation who named it Tifereth B’nai Jacob\, “Splendors of the Sons of Jacob.” The transition from shul to church reflects the shared history of the near Northside as a place where Jewish and Black families lived side by side since the early twentieth century. \nRecently\, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places\, the second synagogue and only the third African American church in the state of Minnesota to hold such an honor. \nCome learn more about this sacred ground and  its shared stories while also exploring the beauty of this historic building and learning why it was selected to be on the National Register. There will be programming to celebrate these interwoven experiences as well as an opportunity to make connections and conversation with others. \nEvent program\n\n3:00 – 4:00 p.m.: Presentations and speakers in the sanctuary\n4:00 – 4:30 p.m.: View exhibits and explore the history of the building\, socialize with light food and refreshments\n4:30 – 4:50 p.m.: Shared conversations in the fellowship hall with welcome from Robin Doroshow\, Executive Director of the Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest\n4:50 – 5:00 p.m.: Wrap up and thank yous led by Kate Dietrick\, Archivist for the Upper Midwest Jewish Archives\n\nSpeakers\nSpeakers will include: Tierre Webster\, Pastor of the First Church of God in Christ/Graham Temple; Rabbi Alexander Davis\, Senior Rabbi at Beth El Synagogue; Dr. Marilyn Chiat\, co-author of the National Register of Historic Places nomination. \nPerformances by the choirs of both First Church of God in Christ and Beth El Synagogue \nThank you to our co-sponsors\nThis event is brought to you by the First Church of God in Christ\, Beth El Synagogue\, Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest\, Adath Jeshurun Congregation\, and Upper Midwest Jewish Archives University of Minnesota Libraries.

SUMMARY:Violins of Hope: Strings of the Holocaust Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Narrated by Academy Award-winning actor Adrien Brody\, Violins of Hope – Strings of the Holocaust follows Israeli master violinmaker Amnon Weinstein as he restores violins carried by starving Jewish refugees on death marches\, played under coercion in concentration camps\, and held close in ghettos and work camps—each instrument bearing witness to suffering\, courage\, and resilience. The film interweaves these histories with Weinstein’s mission to collect\, repair\, and return the violins to the world’s stages through performances by renowned musicians and orchestras\, an act of love and defiance against those who tried to silence both the music and a people. \nPost-film conversation featuring Janet Horvath. Ms. Horvath was the associate principal cello of the Minnesota Orchestra from 1980-2012. Her new book\, The Cello Still Sings – A Generational Story of the Holocaust and of the Transformative Power of Music\, will be available for purchase and signing. \nView Trailer Here
