SUMMARY:Hadassah Great Mahj Get-Together
DESCRIPTION:The Hadassah Minneapolis St. Paul Annual Great Mahj Get-Together is scheduled for Sunday\, May 17\, from 1-3:30 p.m. The location will be provided with your e-mail confirmation after you register. This is not a tournament but rather a simple gathering to play Mahj\, with door prizes and light refreshments. It also is a local fun(d)raiser to support Hadassah’s life-saving medical treatment and research in Israel. Each game will have a set time\, and then attendees will go to a different table\, thus mixing around and getting to know others. The games will use the 2026 Mah Jongg card. \nThe event fee is $36\, which includes one ticket for door prizes. Additional tickets will be available online and at the event – 1 for $5 or 3 for $10; you do not need to be present to win. We are grateful to Continental Diamond for their donation of a $250 gift certificate for our grand prize. To view the flyer\, click here. To register\, click here. The deadline to register is May 12\, and no walk-ins are allowed.

SUMMARY:Music\, Memory\, and Resistance: A Book Talk with Dr. James A. Grymes
DESCRIPTION:Internationally renowned musicologist James A. Grymes discusses his National Jewish Book Award–winning book Violins of Hope\, a powerful account of violins played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust. The book also tells the story of Israeli violinmakers Amnon and Avshalom Weinstein\, who restore these instruments and the histories they carry. Grymes explores how the violin served as a lifeline in ghettos and camps—preserving dignity\, sustaining resilience\, and\, in at least one case\, helping avenge murdered family members—revealing why\, wherever there were violins\, there was hope. Q&A follows\, with a reception and book signing to conclude. \nThis event is presented as part of the Minnesota JCC’s People of the Book series. \nCLICK HERE to reserve your spot \nFor the safety and security of all JCC patrons – any non-member guest attending an event at one of our Minnesota JCC campuses will need to show a valid US ID (Drivers License or Passport) to access the facility.

SUMMARY:Violins of Hope: Strings of the Holocaust Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Narrated by Academy Award-winning actor Adrien Brody\, Violins of Hope – Strings of the Holocaust follows Israeli master violinmaker Amnon Weinstein as he restores violins carried by starving Jewish refugees on death marches\, played under coercion in concentration camps\, and held close in ghettos and work camps—each instrument bearing witness to suffering\, courage\, and resilience. The film interweaves these histories with Weinstein’s mission to collect\, repair\, and return the violins to the world’s stages through performances by renowned musicians and orchestras\, an act of love and defiance against those who tried to silence both the music and a people. \nPost-film conversation featuring Janet Horvath. Ms. Horvath was the associate principal cello of the Minnesota Orchestra from 1980-2012. Her new book\, The Cello Still Sings – A Generational Story of the Holocaust and of the Transformative Power of Music\, will be available for purchase and signing. \nView Trailer Here
