TC Jewfolk: Are you from the Twin Cities?
Dan: I was born and lived my first 13 years in McAllen, Texas (can you believe it?!). That’s in the very south near the border with Mexico. My dad is from Israel and he had a buddy that lived in South Padre Island so he moved here after living in New York for a while. Then, the family decided to move to Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Nope, not many Jews there either. When I got accepted to go to the U of M Business School, I moved to Minneapolis. It was quite scary! Now I love Minneapolis, though if it weren’t for my family and kids, I’d prefer to live in a warmer climate. I love Minneapolis!
TCJ: You’re the CEO of Tech Guru. What do you guys do?
Dan: Tech Guru is the Caring Technology Company. We care for the technology for our clients who are primarily business and non-profits with 10-100 employees. We have 10 caring employees. I founded the company 10 years ago. I had been doing computer consulting since the age of 13 when I would ride my bike to my clients and I realized that the reason my clients loved me so much was because I cared. I wouldn’t leave until the job was done. Sometimes clients would invite me to dinner and when it got late and I wouldn’t give up, they’d tell me to go home, do my homework and finish the next day. Tech Guru does tech strategy, tech support, tech projects, and proactive maintenance. We also do hands-on workshop based computer training on things like Gmail and Dropbox. I speak nationally on all kinds of technology and business topics.
TCJ: Are you a computer nerd?
Dan: Yes! I love technology. I am so nerdy that I have Google Glass (and I love it!). I love gadget and gizmos. The more buttons and lights the better. That said, I’m not a gamer (not that there’s anything wrong with that). What I love about technology is how people use it. And I love helping people with technology more than anything else.
TCJ: Are you involved in any other TC organizations?
Dan: Entrepreneurs Organization is my favorite. I’ve served on the board for over three years. I organized the program (that I just graduated from!) which helps early-stage entrepreneurs achieve their first million dollars in sales in their business! Now I’m leading up a program for student entrepreneurs and also our big Entrepreneurs Rally.
I also serve on the Board of Trustees at Adath Jeshurun Congregation.
TCJ: What’s your favorite Jewish holiday?
Dan: Sukkot because I love being manly and building the Sukkah!
TCJ: Who is the coolest Jew?
Dan: Jerry Seinfeld – I love his new web series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.”
TCJ: Have you been to Israel? What is your favorite memory?
Dan: Yes! I did Birthright in 2004. I have a HUGE family in Israel and extended my trip for an additional week. My dad picked me up at the airport with my uncle. So many great memories. My favorite might be having shabbat with my uncle’s family and once shabbat was over, we had this big hoe-down with one of my cousins on the keys and everyone singing and dancing and clapping. I was clapping and singing and happy too because I thought I was going to die without internet and email for 24 hours.
TCJ: What’s your favorite summer activity?
Dan: So many!! I love summer! Riding motorcycle (anybody want to go for a ride some time?), playing outside with my two boys (Isaac, 3 and Jonah, 11 months). Anything outdoors. Camping. Running. Sitting on the patio and enjoying a beer at The Butcher and the Boar. We LOVE going strawberry picking and Apple picking (in their seasons) as a family. Hey–If this Tech Guru thing doesn’t work out, we could always be a migrant farm worker family, except that Isaac likes to eat the produce.
TCJ: What’s your favorite thing to do in the cities?
Dan: My wife and I are total foodies and one of our favorite things to do is to try out new restaurants!
TCJ: What else do you do for fun?
Dan: CrossFit, Read (currently reading Benjamin Franklin by Walter Isaacson. It’s a GREAT book!), travel, and time with my kids: I love to read to them, be a horse, a dog, or a tree for them, kiss and hug them, build things with them, go to Yogurt Lab with them, coaching T-ball, ride bicycle and go to the park with them, go running with them in the jogging stroller, teach Isaac how to ride his bicycle, teach him how to ride his ride-on toy car (he’s a terrible driver), sing to them, hold and cuddle with them, and doing morning and bedtime routine (bath, reading, cuddling).
TCJ: Give us one more reason you’re folking awesome!
Dan: I don’t want to toot my own horn…but…I really love helping people. I love meeting entrepreneurs and talking business.
