It’s enough to say…. “And All That Jazz…” and you’ll all be jumping for tix, right? I know.
But I still want to write a bit. This is a blog after all. So humor me. And then I’ll give away the goodies.
So Why See This Show?
The Ordway is bringing “Chicago” the Musical to Minneapolis for JUST ONE WEEK! August 7-12. Mark your calendars. Why? Because…
It’s got drama. From the playbill: “Murder. Greed. Corruption. Violence. Exploitation. Adultery. Treachery. Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, CHICAGO is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who maliciously murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids.”
It’s got awards. The Broadway show is the winner of six 1997 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Cast Recording, and it’s the fourth longest-running production in Broadway history. That’s how awesome it is.
It’s got celebrity. Starring as Billy Flynn is John O’Hurley, the award-winning actor, best known as “J. Peterman” on “Seinfeld.”  He danced his way into the hearts of America as the ultimate champion of the highly rated ABC show “Dancing with the Stars,” starred on Broadway inCHICAGO, as the male lead “Billy Flynn” and starred in a two-year stint as the head of the Round Table, King Arthur, in Eric Idle’s hilarious musical comedy “Monty Python’s Spamalot” in Las Vegas. On the small screen he can be seen weekly on the popular syndicated show “Family Feud.”
So What’s Jewish About It?
Chicago’s legendary book is by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, the music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. Fred Ebb (1928-2004) was born in NY to a Jewish family. However, while Jewish, the New York Times wrote after Ebb’s death in 2004 that the family was so assimilated that the first song Ebb wrote, in second  grade, was a Christmas carol. But hey, with Ebb’s repertoire of amazing, award-winning songs & musicals, we’ll take him.

I love all the songs in this fabulous musical but if I had to pick a favorite it’s gotta be “Mr Cellophane” . What clever lyrics!
