Generation GPS: a Happy Hour for the American Dream

This is a guest post by By Julie Carpenter, Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis
“The American dream is elusive for a new generation,” according to an article in the New York Times published on July 6th.
Times writer Louis Uchitelle says, “the so-called millennials, 18 to 29 have an unemployment rate of nearly 14 percent, which approaches the levels of that group in the Great Depression.”
Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis (JFCS) is working with this group to help them find employment and strategize ways to compete and succeed in today’s highly competitive job market. Janet Flam, JFCS Job Seeker Assistance Program Manager, says, “JFCS wants to work with this generation by helping them find their own way of steering their career towards the employment and work experience they want.”
This Tuesday, August 10th, JFCS will host a happy hour and discussion, “Generation GPS – Your Roadmap from College to Career” with the experts at generations.com on finding employment and creating synergy among the generations in the workplace.
This free event will be held at 6 p.m. on the 10th at the DoubleTree Hotel Minneapolis Park Place (1500 Park Place Boulevard) in St. Louis Park.

Margie Earhart, JFCS Career and Community Services Director, says “This program is the beginning of an effort to reach out to the millennial generation. We’re looking forward to offering ongoing workshops and opportunities to help this group meet their employment goals.”
