Ah, college — those years of exploration during which raging hormones and the need to rebel eclipsed learning. Regretting those not-so-serious efforts of yours to sink your teeth into some studies? Here’s another chance — a one-night opportunity to find a great teacher and take real joy in learning something. ENGAGE! is an evening of Jewish learning presented by the St. Paul JCC and Talmud Torah of St. Paul with support from the Jewish Federation of Greater St. Paul. It takes place on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at 7 pm at the Talmud Torah of St. Paul. And all it costs is $15.00!
Full disclosure: I’m on staff at the St. Paul JCC and this is “my” event. But it’s a damn good one. Join other TC jewfolk on a freezing cold night in January, tickle your brain, expand your mind, and have a bottom-line fine time with your people.
The class choices are wide and wonderful. Want something political? Try Menches in the Trenches with Jewish Community Actions staffers, and explore what worked in the successful “Vote No” campaigns this last November. What about getting a handle on the situation in Israel in Arie Zmora’s class: 2013: Israel at the Crossroads?
You want something literary? Join Earl Schwartz for Shylock and High Schlock: What Shakespeare’s Audience Knew About the Jew He Drew. Do you want to do the writing? Then sit down with novelist Kate Ledger and Discover Yourself as a Jewish Writer.
There’s Talmud: A Rabbi Crosses a River and Solves the Future of the Jewish People with Rabbi Adam Stock Spilker. And there’s film: Jewish Liberals in Hollywood with U of M Associate Professor Rob Silberman. There’s cooking: Warm Flavors for a Cold Night: Warming Up From the Inside Out with chef Zehorit Heilicher. There’s playing: The Dialectics of Mahj (as in Jong) with Frances Fischer (beginners especially welcome). And there’s moving your body with the dance work-out session SABABA! led by choreographer and teacher Shira Schwartz.
And then, after classes (there are two hour-long class sessions) we’ll all hang out and drink wine and eat chocolates and listen to live jazz from local giggers Big Sunflower, led by Chris Hagedorn.
This is not college and it ain’t Hebrew school. It’s, well, fun. What a concept.
