Job Summary/Description:

The Executive Director will perform such duties as may be requested by the president(s), rabbi, and officers to further the vision of the synagogue as described in the congregation’s mission statement. Align synagogue resources and facilities to maximize communication and minimize conflicts between the efforts of members, congregational leadership, rabbis, and employees, and act as a liaison between members, officers, employees, and affiliates. Report to the president, and more broadly to the board of trustees, as the representatives of the congregation.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. MEMBERSHIP AND PUBLIC RELATIONS: Maintain warm, open, and available communications with members to answer questions and resolve concerns. Staff liaison to committees. Staff lead on external relations (community, other synagogues, governmental, etc.).
  1. ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Serve as staff lead in all financial matters. Collaborate with the Board to implement long-range planning and support fundraising efforts.
  1. ADMINISTRATION: Oversee the operations of everyday synagogue life. This includes:
  • Hire and supervise all staff (including programming, communications, finance, facilities, catering); all contractors; all vendors.
  • Maintain vendor relations.
  • Serve as staff liaison to lay leadership (board, officers, and committees).

Experience and Qualifications


  1. 5-10 years’ experience in organizational management; nonprofit or religious institution preferred
  2. Bachelor’s degree or comparable work experience
  3. Demonstrated communications skills
  4. Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, fluid environment
  5. Knowledge of Jewish practice and culture preferred.

Additional Information

Broadly speaking, expect roughly 25% of your duties to be scheduled/schedulable while some 75% may be more ad-hoc, on-demand- this varies seasonally due to the needs of the Jewish Liturgical calendar and Member lifecycle and Education events.

Beth Jacob is a welcoming, egalitarian Conservative synagogue of more than 350 families located in Mendota Heights, Minnesota. We are guided by the principles of Torah (study), Avodah (meaningful worship and work), and Gemilut Chasidim (acts of loving-kindness). We exist as a congregation in order to practice and further our understanding of Conservative Judaism through the celebration of Shabbat, holidays and lifecycle events, and daily practice.
