Job Summary/Description:

Teach a class of 8 – 10 students, grades 4 & 5, one Sunday per month for Or Emet’s Jewish Cultural School (JCS), with emphasis Jewish identity, history, values, arts and traditions.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Plan one 2.5 hour session per month for students grades 4-5 following program curriculum framework
Prepare materials needed for implementing lesson
Communicate in advance with JCS Director regarding additional materials or technology needed for lesson, or need for volunteers to assist with the lesson.
Implement the lesson.
Maintain a positive, safe and respectful environment in the classroom.
Greet students’ parents and provide feedback on their students as needed.
Adhere to safety procedures for the school and facility.
Clean up classroom after lesson and return to condition for use by regular teacher on Monday morning.
Attend occasional (1-3 throughout the year) teacher meetings.
Be available for extended Sundays to celebrate Sukkot (party), T’Bshvah (Seder), and Purim (carnival) and evening Hanukah party to lead students in a brief prepared performance.
Communicate and difficulties, requests for assistance, and suggestions for program improvement to the JCS Director.

Experience and Qualification Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree.
Experience working with elementary age children in a school or other youth program setting.
Positive feelings of Jewish identity
Knowledge of Jewish culture, history and values
Positive feelings of Jewish identity
Good organization skills for preparing materials and implementing lessons.
Strong communication skills for collaborating with teaching colleagues and communicating with parents.

Additional Information:

Or Emet’s Jewish Cultural School meets one Sunday per month, September through May, at the Saint Paul Talmud Torah school in Saint Paul. The school serves children from age 3 through Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Our program is growing, and we welcome teachers interested in supporting growth and refining curriculum. Our families are interested in having their children develop a positive Jewish identity around traditions, history, arts and values, including social action and social justice.
