SUMMARY:Yom Hashoah Film Screening: For the Living
DESCRIPTION:In January 1945\, ten-year-old Holocaust survivor Marcel Zielinski made a treacherous 60-mile journey on foot from Auschwitz-Birkenau to Kraków\, Poland\, in search of his family. Decades later\, 250 cyclists from 12 countries retraced his path in an empathetic mission called Ride for the Living\, created and run by JCC Krakow. This powerful documentary draws parallels between Marcel’s harrowing experience and the cyclists’ journey\, sparking an urgent conversation about our ongoing struggle between dehumanization and empathy. \nThis special screening will include the attendance of Co-Director Tim Roper and Producer Lisa Effress who will introduce the film and participate in a Q&A after the screening. \nCOST: $14 GENERAL ADMISSION • $12 STUDENTS/SENIORS \nTICKETS \nPresented in partnership by the Minnesota JCC and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC). \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Violins and Hope Exhibition - From the Holocaust to Symphony Hall
DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota JCC is proud to present Violins and Hope – From the Holocaust to Symphony Hall an extraordinary exhibition built around the internationally renowned project and its moving collection of restored string instruments once played by Jewish musicians before and during the Holocaust. Each violin carries a deeply personal story—bearing witness to one of history’s darkest chapters while honoring those who faced unimaginable adversity and the resilience of individuals who turned to music as a source of solace\, survival\, and defiance. \nThe exhibition also features work by Daniel Levin\, the first photographer to document— with remarkable depth—both the collection of violins that survived the Holocaust and the artful process of restoring them. Through hauntingly beautiful photographs and compelling text\, Violins and Hope – From the Holocaust to Symphony Hall brings these instruments and their histories into vivid presence\, inviting visitors to experience the violins up close\, learn about the musicians who once played them\, and engage in broader conversations about cultural memory\, the persistence of antisemitism\, and why remembrance matters. This exhibition is both a memorial and a celebration—of Jewish culture\, identity\, and the unbreakable human spirit. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Music as Testimony: A Violins of Hope Gathering at Walker West
DESCRIPTION:Violins of Hope gives voice to Holocaust-era instruments whose music once sustained lives under unimaginable oppression\, now restored to bear witness through sound and story. This legacy resonates deeply with African American traditions that have long used music to survive\, remember\, and assert humanity in the face of injustice. Though these histories are distinct\, they are bound by a shared understanding of music as testimony—truth carried when words are not enough. At Walker West\, this gathering calls our community to listen\, reflect\, and honor music’s power to preserve dignity across generations. \nSpecial Guests: Violins of Hope Co-Founder Avshi Weinstein and Walker West Artistic Director Ernest Bisong \n \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Westminster Town Hall Forum - Ethics & Story: Violins of Hope
DESCRIPTION:On November 17\, 1983\, Elie Wiesel began his Westminster Town Hall Forum speech “Why Hate?” on memory and the Holocaust by saying\, “The best thing one can do at noon on a Thursday is to tell stories.” \nNow\, more than 42 years later\, we gather anew to consider the power of stories and the role of music and memory by welcoming Violins of Hope\, presented by the Minnesota JCC. Violins of Hope is a powerful collection of over 70 restored string instruments played by Jewish musicians before and during the Holocaust. These extraordinary violins will be featured in May – June 2026 in local performances\, exhibitions\, and educational programs that honor the memory of the Holocaust and carry a message of hope\, resilience\, resistance\, and unity. Our Forum will feature some of these instruments and will weave together their stories with music played on them\, as we consider the role of story and storytelling in defending human rights and human dignity. \nWith Special Guests: Rabbi Marcia A. Zimmerman of Temple Israel\, Avshi Weinstein of Violins of Hope\, and Rev. Dr. Jessica Patchett of Westminster Presbyterian Church. \nA free public reception will immediately follow the program. \n \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Music\, Memory\, and Resistance: A Book Talk with Dr. James A. Grymes
DESCRIPTION:Internationally renowned musicologist James A. Grymes discusses his National Jewish Book Award–winning book Violins of Hope\, a powerful account of violins played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust. The book also tells the story of Israeli violinmakers Amnon and Avshalom Weinstein\, who restore these instruments and the histories they carry. Grymes explores how the violin served as a lifeline in ghettos and camps—preserving dignity\, sustaining resilience\, and\, in at least one case\, helping avenge murdered family members—revealing why\, wherever there were violins\, there was hope. Q&A follows\, with a reception and book signing to conclude. \nThis event is presented as part of the Minnesota JCC’s People of the Book series. \nCLICK HERE to reserve your spot \nFor the safety and security of all JCC patrons – any non-member guest attending an event at one of our Minnesota JCC campuses will need to show a valid US ID (Drivers License or Passport) to access the facility.  \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Violins of Hope - Through the Lens of Hope: An Artist Talk with Daniel Levin
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of photography and memory with photographer Daniel Levin\, featuring an exhibit reception\, artist talk\, and book signing for Violins and Hope: From the Holocaust to Symphony Hall—winner of the 2022 Independent Publisher National Book of the Year. Levin is the first photographer to document\, in extraordinary depth\, the Tel Aviv workshop of Amnon Weinstein and the hauntingly intimate process behind the Violins of Hope—a mission to restore instruments that survived ghettos and camps even when their owners often did not. Through luminous photographs and compelling stories\, Levin invites us into a world of craft and devotion\, tracing how these violins were brought back to life and carried onto stages around the globe. Today\, the work continues through Amnon’s son\, Avshalom Weinstein\, ensuring these instruments remain living witnesses—sounding with resilience\, remembrance\, and human dignity. \nReception and book-signing with Daniel to follow in the Tychman Shapiro Gallery. \n \nFor the safety and security of all JCC patrons – any non-member guest attending an event at one of our Minnesota JCC campuses will need to show a valid US ID (Drivers License or Passport) to access the facility.  \n  \n  \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Hope / Tikvah: A Youth Arts Showcase Presented by Rimon’s Keren Or Program
DESCRIPTION:“All of a sudden there was music. And hope.” \nHope / Tikvah is a showcase of teen-created artwork\, featuring pieces made in response to a single prompt: Make hope visible. Show us what it means to you. Inspired in part by our community’s Violins of Hope residency—and the story of one violin once played by a gifted young musician whose life was transformed through music in extraordinarily difficult times—this program lifts up tikvah as an active practice: planting seeds (zera’im) even in uncertain soil\, repairing the world (tikkun olam) through small courageous acts\, and tending the spark (nitzotz) of light (or) within ourselves and one another. Through painting\, drawing\, photography\, sculpture\, dance\, music\, mixed media\, and more\, teens share what carries them through challenges and how creativity becomes resilience—each piece a personal answer\, and together\, a collective statement: even in difficult times\, there is light. There is hope. \nPresented in partnership with Adath Jeshurun Congregation. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:A Violin Returned: Eva Neubeck in Conversation with Ari King
DESCRIPTION:More than a century ago\, a German concertmaster and music school director named Siegmund Hess left behind a list of belongings—among them\, two violins that would later vanish in the shadow of Nazi persecution. For decades\, they were seemingly lost to time\, until one of those instruments made its way home. \nJoin Eva Neubeck\, Hess’s great-granddaughter\, for an intimate afternoon of story\, memory\, and music as she shares the extraordinary journey of rediscovering and recovering her family’s violin—an heirloom displaced during the Holocaust era and returned generations later through a trail of documents\, chance connections\, and persistent hope. \nMs. Neubeck will be joined by Ari King\, and together they’ll explore what it means to search for what was lost\, to follow fragments of evidence across time and distance\, and to listen for the human story held inside an object—one that asks what survives: the artifacts that carry history\, the families who keep searching\, and the way a single instrument can hold the weight of loss and the possibility of return. \nMs. Neubeck will share the recovered violin during the program\, and it will be played by violinist Raycurt Lemuel\, a musician with Brass Solidarity. \n \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Violins of Hope: Strings of the Holocaust Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Narrated by Academy Award-winning actor Adrien Brody\, Violins of Hope – Strings of the Holocaust follows Israeli master violinmaker Amnon Weinstein as he restores violins carried by starving Jewish refugees on death marches\, played under coercion in concentration camps\, and held close in ghettos and work camps—each instrument bearing witness to suffering\, courage\, and resilience. The film interweaves these histories with Weinstein’s mission to collect\, repair\, and return the violins to the world’s stages through performances by renowned musicians and orchestras\, an act of love and defiance against those who tried to silence both the music and a people. \nPost-film conversation featuring Janet Horvath. Ms. Horvath was the associate principal cello of the Minnesota Orchestra from 1980-2012. Her new book\, The Cello Still Sings – A Generational Story of the Holocaust and of the Transformative Power of Music\, will be available for purchase and signing. \nView Trailer Here \n\n\n	Related
