Pop quiz: You’re handed a banana, a crumpled up piece of paper, three defunct iPhone cables, and a leaf. What do you do next?
- Throw them in the trash
- Use the objects to create caricatures of celebrities, politicians, and other public figures
Israeli artist Hanoch Piven has been choosing option B for the last 20 years, and his surprisingly accurate portraits have graced the pages of Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, and dozens of other publications around the world.
Piven values the art of playfulness. “Artists know that playfulness is fertile ground for creativity,” he says in his TedX talk. “When we play, we are free.”
Ready to play? This Sunday, January 18, you have two opportunities to learn from Piven’s playfulness. From 1-3 pm, under Piven’s guidance, you (and your whole family!) are invited to create your own self portrait collage at the Drawing with Objects Workshop. At 7:30pm, Piven’s lecture will demonstrate how intuition, right brain thinking, serendipity, trial and error and above all, a healthy amount of fun and humor, can trigger our creativity. Drawing With Objects Workshop and Seeing Faces Lecture are part of the Israel Center for the Minneapolis Jewish Federation’s Culture BLVD IV series, and are presented in partnership with the Sabes JCC’s Jewish Humor Festival.
“This is the perfect activity for families on a cold day,” says Eilat Harel, Director of the Israel Center of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation. “A chance to have some fun, be creative together, and experience a unique piece of Israeli culture.”
