Deb Pastner faced a decision that many face on a daily basis: What to do with an aging parent who needs help.
“We were moving her here from Vermont and I wanted her close to me,” said Pastner. “We’re Jewish, so that was a factor, but we looked at a lot of places.”
Pastner settled on Roitenberg Family Assisted Living Residence in St. Louis Park – part of the Sholom system.
“We’re lucky that the Twin Cities has a lot of options,” Pastner said, citing one of the reasons that she moved her mother here was the lack of options in Vermont. “Also, Roitenberg is rooted in Judaism and it’s infused with a sense of Jewish culture, but people who aren’t Jewish feel comfortable.”
Paula Castle, the housing director at Sholom said that many people look to Roitenberg because it’s a kosher facility, but not everyone.
“Anybody can choose Sholom no matter their religion,” Castle said. “We’re open and affirming to all faiths.”
Roitenberg is part of the Ackerberg Sholom West campus in St. Louis Park, which includes an independent living building for seniors and memory care accommodations.
Pastner also appreciated that Roitenberg had a homey feel to it.
“Other places, while nice, felt more cavernous and corporate,” she said. “I’m not sure if it’s smaller physically, but it felt that way.”
Castle said that at Roitenberg, everything is inclusive in rent: three meals per day, housekeeping, laundry service, change of linens and spiritual and social programming. There are a nurse and home health care aide on site 24-7. There is a higher staff-to-resident ratio than an independent living facility, but lower than a nursing home. Services such as nursing care, bathing, dressing, etc are available at an additional cost.
A home health aide at Roitenberg for nearly two years, Anisa Abdille, says, “I’m aware of the fact that we have people in different stages here, and when you are able-bodied and taking care of someone, it’s very humbling and sobering. I’ve worked in many places and I find Roitenberg to be like home.”
