Job Summary/Description:

The Newman School of Talmud Torah of St. Paul, a Reggio and Montessori-inspired, religiously diverse Jewish Early Childhood program, is accepting applicants for a full-time Assistant Teacher (or possibly two part-time Assistant Teachers) for the 2018-19 school year. The successful Assistant Teacher is dependable and a team player who understands children and their needs and who can work collaboratively with the Lead Teacher to create unique and relevant learning experiences for the children.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

At the Newman School of the Talmud Torah of St. Paul, our teachers:

  • Work together as a team to create a positive work environment
  • Are attentive and responsive to children and their families, creating a warm and nurturing community where each feels included and accepted.
  • Facilitate children’s social competence and ability to learn through interacting with others.
  • Build rapport with parents through effective communication.
  • Are Reggio-inspired and focus on making the experiences, ideas and learning of the children visible, launching studies responsive to the children’s interests, devoting time to observing children, documenting observations and reflecting together as a teaching team. We design classroom schedules that are consistent and predictable, with transitions that are handled calmly and with planning and communicated visually to children. Time and space for play and for children’s exploration is a priority, so we keep transitions to a minimum and make sure children are not hurried from place to place.
  • Teach Judaism and Jewish values through a mix of discussion, introduction of basic Hebrew language, stories, music and hands-on experiences. We facilitate key Jewish experiences including Havdalah, Shabbat, visiting the Sukkah and shaking a lulav, having a Tu B’shvat Seder, having a Purim costume parade and more. Ritual objects become familiar to the children as do Hebrew words, songs, and Jewish stories.

Experience and Qualification Requirements:

Applicants must meet DHS requirements to work with children, ages 33 months – 5 years old, in this program. Knowledge of Judaism with some Hebrew proficiency is required. Reggio and Creative Curriculum knowledge is a plus.
