SUMMARY:Torah and Mindfulness Through the Lens of Hasidic Masters
DESCRIPTION:Meets online Tuesdays\, 8:30 AM – 9:45 AM \n\n2026 Session Dates\nTuesday\, Feb 17 | Tuesday\, Feb 24 | No class 3/3\, Purim | Tuesday\, March 10 | Tuesday\, March 17 | Tuesday\, March 24 | Tuesday\, April 7 | Tuesday\, April 14 | Tuesday\, April 21 | Tuesday\, April 28 | Tuesday\, May 5 | Tuesday\, May 12 | Tuesday\, May 19 | Tuesday\, May 26 | Tuesday\, June 2 | Tuesday\, June 9 | Tuesday\, June 16 \n\nCourse Description\nJoin us for lively discussion\, rich text study\, and compelling analysis. As we come to each Torah portion each year\, we find new inspiration\, new meanings\, and new connections with the text. We use materials that enable us to access the depth and richness of Hasidic spirituality presented in contemporary terms. Our texts (in English) are the comments of a Hasidic master on the Torah portion\, and its extension based in mindfulness practice and Jewish spirituality. \nClasses are designed for drop-in participation; no prior knowledge is necessary or expected. \n\nInstructor Bio\nSara Lynn Newberger remembers receiving her first chumash (volume of Torah) in 3rd grade – and thus was born a life-long love of studying Torah. Born in Chicago\, she landed in St. Paul in 1989 where she came to work at the Talmud Torah of St. Paul Day School because the mission and vision resonated with her soul. After serving in many roles at TTSP\, she served as the Director of Hineni from its inception in 2014 to 2022. She believes passionately in the importance of Jewish learning and the impact it can have on people’s lives. She loves exploring Jewish texts\, customs\, values\, and ideas with students. \nSara Lynn enjoys cooking\, gardening\, visiting with friends\, singing\, and being outdoors. Sara Lynn is married to Barbie Levine and is Savta to Ruby and Lucy. \n\nSuggested Donation\nWe welcome your generous support to help sustain this class and future courses. \n\nRegistration Form\nClick here to register. \n\nLearn More\nLearn more about FolkLab\, our current classes\, and our Engage! Day of Learning.

SUMMARY:Polina Shepherd: Yiddish-Russian troubadour
DESCRIPTION:Polina Shepherd (UK) & Red Thread (Minnesota) \nDate: April 8  \nLocation: MetroNOME Brewery\, St Paul \nTime: Doors 6:30\, Music 7-10 p.m.\n$30 \nRussian-born and UK-based Polina Shepherd is a central figure in global innovation of contemporary Yiddish music. Shepherd’s solo performances weave together 19th–20th century folklore with original compositions exploring themes of travel\, identity\, and cultural fusion\, infused with humor\, heart\, and mesmerizing improvisation. \nBorn into a Russian Jewish family in Novosibirsk\, Polina was then an active young Jewish leader in Tatarstan during the 1980s and 1990s\, as Jews in the Soviet Union began to reconnect with their roots. At just 17\, she joined Russia’s first professional klezmer band after Perestroika\, Simcha\, touring the former Soviet Union while studying her musical heritage. Since moving to the UK in 2003\, Polina continues to lead choirs and collaborate with various bands\, orchestras\, and soloists\, performing internationally. \n“Shepherd’s performance\, like all the best ones we’ve heard this week\, was not about kitsch\, sentimentality\, or nostalgia. This wasn’t singing around the campfire. Delivering the prayer inimitably\, with ornamentation reflecting her immersion in the chant of the muezzin as much as in the cantorial tradition\, it was about transcendence via art. It was a cry from her own heart\, an act of creation\, and a transformation of time and space into.” – Forward \nwww.polinashepherd.co.uk \nRed Thread \n“Ingrained with generational storytelling\, Red Thread fuses the past into the present with gorgeous harmonies and folk sensibilities. Their music harkens to the importance of ancestry\, culture\, and traditions still present in our lives.” – MusicinMinnesota.com \nRed Thread is a woman-fronted ensemble playing folk music exploring and exploding Yiddish\, Balkan\, Irish\, and Scandinavian vocal traditions. With the tight harmonies of a family band and lush\, innovative instrumentation\, the ensemble shares traditional and new music with warmth and humor. Frontwoman Sarah Larsson is known as a member of The Nightingale Trio and a co-founder of Klezmer on Ice; The Nightingale Trio performed on the Cedar stage and on “A Prairie Home Companion” and has been called “a revelation” by Minnesota Public Radio’s Steve Staruch. Ensemble members in winter 2026 include Twin Cities luminaries: Kat Parent\, Rada Kolarova\, Pat O’Keefe (clarinet)\, Jacqueline Ultan (cello)\, and Toby Ramaswamy (drums). \nRed Thread’s teachers include Ethel Raim (NEA National Heritage Fellow 2018)\, Michael Alpert (NEA National Heritage Fellow 2015)\, and musicians working in the lineage of Flory Jagoda (NEA National Heritage Fellow 2002). Red Thread has performed with & opened for: The Klezmatics\, Lemon Bucket Orkestra\, Maryna Krut\, Humbird\, Roe Family Singers\, and Spencer LaJoye. Red Thread\, with Sarah Larsson\, was a Cedar Commissions artist in 2024. \nhttps://www.redthreadsings.com/

SUMMARY:Yom Hashoah Film Screening: For the Living
DESCRIPTION:In January 1945\, ten-year-old Holocaust survivor Marcel Zielinski made a treacherous 60-mile journey on foot from Auschwitz-Birkenau to Kraków\, Poland\, in search of his family. Decades later\, 250 cyclists from 12 countries retraced his path in an empathetic mission called Ride for the Living\, created and run by JCC Krakow. This powerful documentary draws parallels between Marcel’s harrowing experience and the cyclists’ journey\, sparking an urgent conversation about our ongoing struggle between dehumanization and empathy. \nThis special screening will include the attendance of Co-Director Tim Roper and Producer Lisa Effress who will introduce the film and participate in a Q&A after the screening. \nCOST: $14 GENERAL ADMISSION • $12 STUDENTS/SENIORS \nTICKETS \nPresented in partnership by the Minnesota JCC and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC).
