Noah’s Ark
The rush of holidays is behind us, but now it is time to think of fun activities to keep us busy until Thanksgiving!
The stories in the Torah are at their most kid friendly this time of year.  Thinking about the story of Noah and the rainbow open up all kinds of fun food activities, toys to play with and of course great songs to sing.  At the end of this note, please feel free to click on links to get full lyrics to the songs.  For a free MP3 of Rise and Shine, just e-mail me at [email protected].  Enjoy!
Food Fun
Choose five different tasting foods.  Children are going to match the flavor of the food to a color of the rainbow.  You can select very different types and textures of food such as carrots, celery, blueberries, raspberries and lemons. You can go for 5 different flavors of yogurt which have the same texture but different tastes.
With young children, let them taste the foods first with their eyes open.  Then challenge them to guess what the color of the food is with their eyes closed.
rainbow-pinwheel-cookies-lg-1593325587Rainbow shortbread cookies:
Ingredients:
3/4 pound unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup sugar, plus extra for sprinkling
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, mix together the butter and 1 cup of sugar until they are just combined. Add the vanilla. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour and salt, then add them to the butter-and-sugar mixture. Mix on low speed until the dough starts to come together.
For rainbow pinwheels, divide dough evenly into five bowls, and color each with a different color liquid food coloring. Dump each color onto a surface dusted with flour and shape into a flat disk. Wrap in plastic and chill for 30 minutes.
Roll each color dough into 14 grape-sized balls.
Combine a ball of each color and quickly roll into a larger ball. It will look like a little beach ball. Then roll that ball between your hands and the counter or cutting board until you have a cylinder about 6 inches long.
Starting from one end of the cylinder, roll the dough into a coil, twisting the cylinder as you go. Roll edges of the cookie in extra sugar or colored sprinkles.
Repeat with remaining cookies.
Place the cookies on an ungreased baking. Bake the cookies for 10 to 11 minutes, or until done (fully done middle with the barest touch of golden brown on the edges).
IMG_1766Matching games:
In come the animals two by two.
Raid your toy closet and find all the stuffed animals available.
Give your child ideas on how to match them.  By color, by size, by type of animal.  Think of all the ways to have the animals go onto the ark two by two.
Create a quick and fun ark with any size box.  Use a pillow case, sheet or table cloth to cover the box and march the animals inside.  Use blue wrapping paper to create the water that the animals will be floating on.
Make animal playing cards with images from magazines or online.  Glue them or print them onto card stock and make your own matching game.
RISE AND SHINE

Rise and shine and give G-d your glory, glory,
Rise and shine and give G-d your glory, glory,
Rise and shine and give G-d your glory, glory,
Children of the Lord.
The Lord said to Noah “there’s gonna be a floody, floody.” (2x’s)
Get those children out of the muddy, muddy
Children of the Lord.  Chorus
NOAH, NOAH
Who built the ark?
Noah, Noah
Who built the ark?
Brother Noah built the ark.
Didn’t old Noah build the ark, He built it out of Hickory bark.
He built it big, both wide and tall,  Plenty of room for the large and small
