Win Free Tickets to Andy Statman at the Cedar Cultural Center

Klezmer? I hardly know her!

Andy Statman is coming to the Cedar Cultural Center on December 2nd, and TC Jewfolk has free tickets to give away. Who’s Andy Statman? Oh, just some crazy good Klezmer musician. Don’t believe me, check this out (He’s the one on the right rocking out with the mandolin):

Who is Andy Statman?

Um, awesome. Seriously, guys. Andy Statman learned how to play banjo and guitar when he was twelve. Twelve! When I was twelve I still thought I could become a professional baseball player without having to practice, and Andy Statman had already learned two instruments. He can also play R&B and jazz saxophone, but the funny thing is: he doesn’t perform with any of these instruments! That’s like a baker saying, “I know how to make all sorts of delicious pies, but I will only make you Apple or Key Lime.” The Apple and Key Lime in this case being mandolin and clarinet.
Here he is playing Klezmer clarinet:

Fiddler, schmiddler

Statman learned to play Klezmer clarinet in the 1970s and has been a prominent leader in a Klezmer revival that’s occurred recently. He’s played with nationally renowned musicians like Itzhak Perlman, Paul Shaffer, Ricky Skaggs, and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. He also teaches Klezmer music at his (perfectly titled) KlezKamp. With his background in many different instruments and styles of music, Statman doesn’t just rehash favorite Fiddler On The Roof songs. He fuses new melodies with old stylings to create something truly unique and inspiring.
