Whew. Did you make it through the holidays? Good. Now that we’re done with that type of calendar craziness, it’s time to fill our planners up with awesome Jew to-do’s – as always, there are plenty on the calendar but my picks for the best are below. So there’s really no reason not to get out there and enjoy all this community has to offer! Here’s the Alef List for October 5th – 18th:
Thursday, 10/7:
If you haven’t had a chance to see the Dead Sea Scrolls at the Science Museum, hurry up! The exhibit leaves MN on the 24th. Why not see them this Thursday when the UJFC of St. Paul’s Young Leadership heads to the exhibit after a happy hour at Burger Moe’s. Shmooze and booze with other young Jews at Burger Moe’s from 5-7pm and then head over to the museum (or, meet folks there at 7:30). Tickets to the exhibit are on you but are so worth the 28 bucks. Wednesday, 10/13:
Unless you’ve been living in a hole, you probably already know that October is breast cancer awareness month (yes, that would be the reason behind the NFL’s pink mouthgaurds). And everybody knows that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so head to the St. Paul JCC for a panel discussion on preventing hereditary cancers. An expert panel (Mary Ahrens, M.S., certified genetic counselor, U of M Medical Center; Jamie Bakkum-Gamez, M.D., gynecologic oncologist, Mayo Clinic; Ellen Kleinbaum, ovarian cancer survivor; and Rabbi Lynn Liberman, director of Congregational Learning, Beth Jacob Congregation) will focus on ovarian cancer and highlight breast cancer due to hereditary gene mutations. They’ll focus on risks to specific populations, including but not limited to Jewish communities. The free event starts at 6pm. Registration is required and walk-ins are welcome.
Thursday, 10/14:
AIPAC MN and Adath Jeshurun are hosting Mr. David Horovitz – prominent Israeli journalist, and longtime editor of the English-language newspaper The Jerusalem Post for a community briefing on the current situation in Israel. I could spend a long time trying to convince you why you should go, but Jenna Mitelman does a better job than I could in her post here. The free event is at Adath Jeshurun in Minnetonka and starts at 7:30pm. RSVP to Jeremy Wynes [email protected].
