Minneapolis, MN — Steve Hunegs, executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC), issued the following statement condemning the hateful and anti-Semitic flyers posted around the University of Minnesota today:
“The Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) and Minnesota Hillel condemn the hateful messages espoused and contained within the flyers posted around the University of Minnesota today. The flyers depict anti-Semitic imagery and make stereotypical generalizations about Jewish influence on the gun control debate. In February 2017, anti-Semitic flyers were posted around the University of Minnesota referencing anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and calling for people to join white-supremacist movements. In March 2016, printers and fax machines at multiple universities around the country (including the U of M) began unexpectedly printing anti-Semitic and racist flyers.
“We commend the swift action taken by the University of Minnesota to remove the pernicious flyers from campus. We also applaud President Eric Kaler for his commitment to fighting anti-Semitism. In 2017, President Kaler formed ‘The President’s and Provost’s Advisory Committee on University History’ to guide the University’s thinking about appropriate modern responses to historical issues.
“We urge anyone with information about the posting of the flyers to come forward. We have every confidence that law enforcement will investigate this incident thoroughly.
“We call on all people of goodwill to recoil at these ideologies and tactics. We will remain vigilant in taking a stand against those who admire the atrocities of Nazism.”
