These are strange and breathless days, the dog days, when people are led to do things they are sure to be sorry for after. – Tuck Everlasting
It. is. hot. And not the “ooh, I think I’ll wear shorts today because it’s April and we finally got rid of the snow” hot. Nope, this is the icky, sticky “why oh why did I not break down and install a window AC unit?!” hot. And even though it’s warm enough to make me want to do nothing other than lay down directly under a blowing fan while sipping iced tea, I know better. Because with elul upon us, I know that this hot mugginess will soon only be a memory as I scrape the frost off my car in the morning and wonder why exactly I thought it was a good idea to move to MN when I had the choice. So I’m going to make the most of the heat. And you should too. Check out the events calendar or scan the Alef List below for the top picks of ways to make the summer days last just a little bit longer…
Now – 8/15/10:
Check out one of the awesome Jewish playwrights/performers at the MN Fringe Festival. So you can’t win tickets through TC Jewfolk anymore (we gave ’em away to one lucky reader) but a $4 button (good for the whole festival) and $12 a show (gets even cheaper if you’re a senior, a student or a MPR member) makes for some cost-effective entertainment. (Notice that I didn’t say “cheap” – accessible prices don’t mean that the shows aren’t high-quality!). Did I mention that almost all of the venues are air-conditioned? Sign me up.
8/19/10:
On either side of the river, you’re covered for a chance to grab a beer and mingle with some MOTs. For those of us slumming on the east side, Beth Jacob 20s & 30s are meeting up at Billy’s on Grand from 5:30 – 7:30 to “shmooze and booze” (their words, not mine!). A great opportunity for those that grew up at Beth Jacob or those that are newer to the community to hang out, have a beer and say hey to Rabbi Allen when he shows up. Over on the other side of the river? You’re covered too. Temple Israel Young Jews (21-29) are throwing a It’s Not Your Bubbie’s BBQ with kickball and grilling. But I have to ask TIYJ, can you find a way to incorporate pop rocks somehow???
