Remember the Lincoln Del restaurant in Bloomington? If you’re under 40, you probably don’t. In fact, if you’re anything like me, there’s a lot of Minnesota’s Jewish history that you don’t know about. Can you name the oldest synagogue in St. Paul? (Mt. Zion) Or the decade Jews first start immigrating to Minnesota? (1850s, from German-speaking countries).
If you’re a Jewish history buff, you’re going to love the event we’re giving away free tickets to this week. [UPDATE 9/26: Contest is over]
On Saturday October 16th, from 6-10pm, the Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest is hosting the fundraiser “Taste Touchdown” in the swanky TCF Bank Stadium private DQ club to raise money for the Upper Midwest Jewish Archives. (you didn’t even know there was such a thing, did you? They’re pretty cool.)
Not only do you get delicious old-school food (from Cecil’s, Dayton’s, Murrays, Porky’s, etc), drinks (Old Fashions, Manhattans and Martinis), and music, but you get a tour of TCF Stadium, including the field, the President’s Box, and the Team Locker Room.
A free pair of tickets for one lucky TC Jewfolk reader. You just have to answer one easy question: What do you think makes a Jewish deli, well, Jewish? There’s no right answer. Creativity is encouraged. Answer the question in the comments to this post before Saturday, September 25th at midnight. We’ll pick the winner randomly.
By the way, even if you don’t win the tickets, you should check out the event (at $36 a ticket, it’s a steal). A great cause, and a fun excuse to boogie with Bubbe. Hope to see you there.
I think when the food reflects what “comfort food” looks like for the Jewish population they serve (even if the only Jews around are the owners and their kids).
What do you think makes a Jewish deli, well, Jewish?
The smell, if it smells like my Nana’s kitchen! Yum!
What makes a Jewish deli Jewish is the large KOSHER symbol proudly displayed on the outside glass. The rest is all secondary.
I think a Jewish deli must always have matzoh ball soup with FLUFFY matzoh balls! And no noodles!
Cecil’s is my favorite, so I have to say that if it is at all like Cecil’s, it is a picture perfect Jewish deli!
Pickles, Beets and Knishes!
Homemade pickles and no treif
Congrats on winning the tickets Ali!
