And people say Jews can’t play basketball. Well, they’ve obviously never met Omri Casspi, an Israeli professional basketball player now with the Sacramento Kings. Omri was drafted into the Sacramento Kings from Israel in 2009 (and was the first Israeli in history to be picked in the 1st round) and at that time became the first Israeli to play in a NBA game.
Omri is coming to the Twin Cities on March 20th with the hope of, well, creaming the Timberwolves. It puts us Jews in a tough spot – who to cheer for? The T-Wolves or Omri?
You have my permission to cheer for both. It should be an awesome game. And luckily, TCJewfolk can help you get in the door. We’re giving away a pair of tickets to see the game.
Actually, the March 20th game is awesome for 2 reasons. (1) Omri is super cool. (2) March 20th is Israeli Heritage Night at the Timberwolves.
What’s Israeli Heritage Night, you ask?
Well, several times a year the Minnesota Timberwolves host cultural nights to honor the diversity of Minnesota’s communities. On Wednesday, December 8th, Target Center was filled with the smell of latkes and the screams of kids playing dreidl as the Timberwolves joined with the United Jewish Fund and Council and the Minneapolis Jewish Federation for Jewish Heritage Night.
This Sunday, March 20th, the Minnesota Timberwolves will host Israeli Heritage Night at the Timberwolves, partnering with the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas and the American Israel Chamber of Commerce of Minnesota. There will be a raffle at the game to win great prizes, like Timberwolves tickets, and all the money from the raffle will go to the JCRC and the AICCMN. Pretty neat.
Israeli Heritage Night at the T-Wolves is at 2:30pm on Sunday, March 20th. Tix are discounted – $33 instead of $40 for lower level seats, and $9 instead of $15 for upper level seats. If you don’t win our free pair of tickets, click this link to get the registration form. Questions? Email Jacob at [email protected] with any questions.
Win Free Tickets to Israeli Heritage Night:
We’re giving away a free pair of tickets (valued at $80) to the Timberwolves-Sacramento Kings game on 3/20 at 2:30pm. To win, answer this question in the comments before Wednesday, March 16th at midnight – Why do you think Americans should support the State of Israel. We’ll draw the winner randomly, so there’s no right answer! Good luck and enjoy the game!

Americans should support the State of Israel simply because we have such long standing ties with them. Having a strong, Democratic ally in a historically tumultuous area is enough of a reason. Add to that the fact that nearly half of the Jews in the world live in the US… it seems like supporting Israel is the obvious choice.
We, as Americans, should support Israel because Israel respects diversity, freedom of religion and democracy. Its citizens can dissagree and even protest the government without having to fear the possibility of being arrested, injured or killed. Israel is full of innovation and some of the greatest inventions came from Israel like the instant messenger. Most of all, Israel wants peace and we need to defend Israel from all of its detractors.
And Alon is the winner! Congrats! I’ll email you with more information very soon.
