Positively Bookish
Jews have always had a deep connection to books. We read from the Five Books of Moses, we ask God every year to inscribe us in the Book of Life, we make jokes about books. Some may even call us a People of the Book. (Some do call us that? Oh.) Minneapolis has also been one of the Top 3 most literate cities in the country, ever since that highly scientific poll was created in 2005. So it should come as no surprise that the Twin Cities has a Jewish Book Fair. (We won’t hold it against the fair that most events are being held in St. Paul, only the 12th most literate city in the country.)
When is it?
What are you doing later? Nothing? Cool, come down to the St. Paul JCC TONIGHT at 7:00 P.M., and say hi to me. Then we can both watch Paul David Wellstone Jr. read from his book, and share stories about his dad, Senator Paul Wellstone, as well as his own incredible story.
Just tonight?
No! Of course not, silly. If you can’t make it tonight, there are a bunch of other events you can attend:- On Sunday, October 28th, Eyal Press will read from his book, Beautiful Souls: Saying No, Breaking Ranks, and Heeding the Voice of Conscience in Dark Times. TC Jewfolk will have a review of the book on the 23rd.
- TC Jewfolk is co-sponsoring two events: Alicia Otulski’s Precious Objects: A Story of Diamonds, Family and a Way of Life, on November 4th; and Deborah Feldman’s Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hassidic Roots, on November 17th.
- Etgar Keret is a best-selling Israeli author. His short stories have been featured many places, including on NPR’s This American Life. He comes to the Sabes JCC on November 14th.
- The Fair takes a break after Deborah Feldman’s event, but comes back for Part 2, with three more events, starting in February!
I’m almost convinced, but I could use some press release-like language to really sell me:
Presented by the St. Paul JCC in partnership with the Friends of the St. Paul Public Library with generous support from the George Kaplan Memorial Foundation.
The St. Paul JCC is proud to celebrate the significant contributions of today’s finest authors: seasoned writers, well known among scholarly or literary circles, and fresh voices newly emerging. We believe in the power of the arts to inform and engage us, subtly and deeply, and give meaning to our shared experiences.
We invite you to laugh, to think, to feel, to reflect, to debate, to celebrate, and to Get Inspired!
Bruchim haba’im, Welcome!
Tickets are available at the door, or by calling 651-698-0751, or online.
