With the Minnesota Orchestra on indefinite hiatus, many Minnetonka residents and those in surrounding suburbs may be craving some good classical music. Now add a little Klezmer music, a young hip clarinetist who was raised in Israel, and you have the perfect mix for a concert at Adath Jeshurun Congregation in Minnetonka at 7 PM this Sunday, October 20.
“Classics to Klezmer,” features world-renowned clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein, who is also head of the clarinet music department at University of Minnesota. He’ll be joined by six virtuoso musicians, including his wife, Meira Silverstein on violin, in this concert presented by TAMID, an Adath organization that raises money for theater, arts, music, Israel and dance performances at the synagogue.

The first portion of the evening will feature Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet. The first klezmer piece is a tune called “Zogeches and Freilachs.”
Fiterstein, who was born in Belarus and raised in Israel, went on as a teenager to attend Interlochen Center for the Arts, in Michigan, and then studied at Juilliard in New York City. He also just released this month his first solo album on the Bridge label featuring only the music of Carl Maria von Weber. CDs will be available for purchase at the concert.
Classical music critics have praised Fiterstein, noting that his clarinet playing is “beautiful liquid clarity” (New York Times), and that he “treats his instrument as his own personal voice, dazzling in its spectrum of colors, agility and range” (Washington Post).
Fiterstein arrived here three years ago with his wife. They have two children, a boy, Dani, 5, and a girl, Adinah, 2, and are members of Adath Jeshurun.
