You must know the drill by now.
It’s fun to say that there’s nothing for Jews to do on Christmas besides eat Chinese food and see a movie. But we all know that isn’t true, especially in our Twin Cities Jewish communities. There are plenty of open restaurants in town that don’t serve Chinese food: Rye, Moscow on the Hill, Common Roots, Bad Waitress, Smack Shack… the list goes on. Plus, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to my Gentile friends say their own Christmas plans involve our people’s timeless traditions.
Let’s face it: Chinese food and a movie just doesn’t cut it anymore as the best way for Jews to spend their time on Christmas.Thankfully we in the Twin Cities have other options. Since 2005, we’ve had Jewbilee, the rockin’ Christmas Eve party at First Avenue and 7th Street Entry; and for even longer than that we’ve had the Christmas Day Tzedakah Bowl tournament.
Jewbilee is back at 7th Street Entry and the Depot for the eighth year of partying it up Jew-style on Christmas Eve, and this year will be just as hot as ever. Sons of Moses is back for another year, and if you got to see them last year you know that they alone are worth the price of admission. Joining them will be the Rivkinz, Mazel Tov Cocktail, and DJ General Moses on the Ones and Twos. If that wasn’t enough, get your laugh on with comedy from Stand Up! Records and some of the Twin Cities’ top comedians: Dan Mogol, David Harris, Gus Lynch, Laura Thorne, and Pat Susmilch. The music will be flowing, the comedy will be rolling, and the bar will be open all night. You can watch a movie anytime—this party only happens once a year.
Then wake up the next day for the Minneapolis Jewish Federation’s Tzedakah Bowl! This annual Christmas tradition got bigger this year with the addition of an ultimate frisbee tournament on top of the usual flag football. Unlike past years, there will not be much in the way of family fun this year, but if you’ve got some athletic ability get yourself down to the Metrodome and play where Adrian Peterson plays. They’ll be tearing the place down literally just weeks after this, so don’t miss what will likely be your last chance to set foot inside the Dome.
