Of Spanish and Portuguese origin, Sangria traditionally consists of wine, chopped fruit, sugar and brandy that has been chilled for long time, allowing the wine to sweeten and absorb the fruit flavor. It’s incredibly versatile and utilizes many of ingredients you likely have at home, making it a great spur of the moment option. Either red or white wine may be used, virtually any fruit, sugar or honey as a sweetener, and brandy or other alcohol that sounds good to you. We took these base ingredients and implemented a couple changes of our own. Given that Manischewitz is noticeably sweeter than other wines, we didn’t use additional sugar. We also departed from the traditional brandy route, opting instead for Whisky, a more potent drink we thought would effectively counterbalance the Manischewitz potency.
We hope you try this one for your next Shabbat gathering or in the final weeks of Summer!
