We’ve just entered a period in the Jewish calendar called “The Three Weeks,” in which we turn our attention to the many tragedies that we’ve faced historically as a Jewish people. This culminates in the observance of Tisha B’Av (this year in early August) and the commemoration of the destruction of the first and second Temples. Many observant Jews will refrain from certain pleasurable things during this time. I think this time presents a special opportunity to remember and reflect. One contemporary Jewish song that I think speaks to enduring challenging times is “Esa Einai” by Jackson Mercer, a terrific songleader, songwriter, and rabbinical student at Hebrew College. “I lift my eyes to the mountains, where will my help come from?” However you observe these Three Weeks, I hope they are meaningful.
