Position Summary:

Beth El Synagogue is proud to offer free programming and childcare for kindergarten – 4th grade students during the high holidays. The goal of our childcare program is to provide a fun and engaging environment for students to engage with their friends, with Judaism, and with High Holiday culture at Beth El. We teach Torah and Jewish values in an age-appropriate way using games, Holiday-friendly crafts, and stories. While we offer childcare for students during all Holiday services, the High Holiday Childcare Program Coordinator will create and facilitate programming for Rosh Hashanah (days 1 and 2), and Yom Kippur (Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur services).

The High Holiday Childcare Program Coordinator is responsible for writing the Holiday lesson plans and facilitating successful programming during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. They will communicate lesson plans with the other staff. They will work with staff and the director of youth engagement to ensure that all materials are on hand and that the program runs smoothly. They will provide additional staffing support as needed to address behavioral needs with students and to assist staff. The High Holiday Childcare Program Coordinator will receive support from the Director of Youth Engagement and 3-4 other staff members during programming.

This position is approximately 32 hours of work. There is approximately 17 hours of on-site programming, 5 hours of training, and 10 hours of preparation work required for this role. The High Holiday Childcare Program Coordinator is expected to attend both days of Rosh Hashanah (approximately 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.), Kol Nidre (approximately 6 p.m.-9 p.m.), and Yom Kippur (approximately 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.).

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Specific Responsibilities Include: 

  • Write lesson plans and activities to be led by other holiday staff throughout Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
  • Communicate class plans with staff ahead of time 
  • Facilitate lesson plans and activities on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur by providing necessary materials and information for BESTY teachers and keeping classes on schedule
  • Provide additional behavioral support for students as needed 
  • Delegate responsibilities to staff members as needed 
  • Attend staff trainings on inclusion, behavioral management, program development, and first aid as needed
  • Serve as a role model for students, both secularly and Jewishly 
  • Other duties as assigned 
  • Compensation: $28/hour

Experience and Qualifications Requirements:

Education/Experience: 

  • History of working within an early elementary setting 
  • Excellent at working with young children 
  • Knowledge of basic Jewish traditions and practice 
  • Reports to: Director of Youth Engagement
