In high school growing up, one of my closest friends was Israeli. During Hanukkah, she invited my family over to her house to try her mom’s home-made sufganiyot. They were like nothing I’d ever had before — soft, fluffy and ever-so-sweet, with a dusting of powdered sugar as they came out of the frying pan.
Unfortunately, most of us don’t have an Israeli mother around to whip up a batch of these sugary treats. If you have a sweet tooth like me, and are looking to indulge this Hanukkah season, here’s a few places around the Twin Cities where you can fill the void (even if they’ll never compare to homemade):
Crossroads Delicatessen: Now through the rest of Hanukkah, Crossroads Delicatessen in Minnetonka will be serving sufganiyot. And bonus, they’re Kosher, too!
Glam Doll Donuts: The specialty donut shop will be whipping up their own version of the jelly-filled donuts this holiday season. Call ahead or stop by either of their 2 locations to get your hands on one.
The Kosher Spot: In addition to Hanukkah cookies, decorations and other festive seasonal selections, The Kosher Spot will, indeed, be selling sufganiyot as well.
Bogart’s Doughnut Co. : Now through Dec. 20, Bogart’s will be selling sufganiyot using their signature brioche dough, filled with a house-made triple berry jelly. Yum! Pre-order for larger orders online or stop by their Uptown or Downtown locations.
