SONDHEIM NYT 300 Win Free Tickets to a Night with Stephen Sondheim at the State TheatreTheater buffs, we love you. And we take care of you, nu?

That’s why we’re giving away a FREE PAIR OF TICKETS ($86 value) to Hennepin Theatre Trust’s Living Legends evening with legendary Broadway composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim at the State Theatre on Friday, March 5, 2010 at 8:00pm.

The evening, entitled “Stephen Sondheim: a Life in the Theatre,” will feature Sondheim in conversation with Star Tribune theatre critics Rohan Preston and Graydon Royce.

You’re probably dying right now if you’re a fan of any of these Broadway shows for which Sondheim was the composer and/or lyricist … hmmm… which to pick … how about Into the Woods, West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum? Or if you love any of his songs, from “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” to “Send in the Clowns.”

The man’s awards list is not too shabby either – Sondheim is the winner of an Academy Award, multiple Tony Awards (nine, more than any other composer) including the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre (received 2008), multiple Grammy Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize. And did we mention he’s Jewish?

My question: ‘What is your writing process like, in general? How does it differ depending on whether you’re writing lyrics to someone else’s music versus writing the music yourself?’

“Who is your favorite of all of your characters?”

Would you comment on recent trends on Broadway in terms of new works, not based on a movie?

  6. Joshua C says:

    Mr. Sondheim, what’s your favorite?

  7. Sara says:

    Mr. Sondheim,
I join the throngs who appreciate your masterful use of the English language in your lyrics. What would you say to today’s rap artists and musicians, that would encourage them to inspire and elevate, as well as communicate their message?

  10. Bec says:

What new works do you have your plate today? Do you plan to write any more full musicals?

  11. Congratulations Janet! She won the tickets. The rest of you – go buy a pair of tickets to this awesome show through the Hennepin Theatre District’s website. And we’ll definitely pass along your questions for Sondheim to the powers that be.
