Alef List: Hot, Hot Happenings for Hip Jews

Summertime and the livin’s easy…There’s plenty of good opportunities to get out and about town to soak up the sun and schmooze with other cool Jews. Yup, the livin’ sure is easy. Check out the events calendar for a full listing or read below for the best Jew-to-do’s in the next two weeks.
Here’s the Alef List for June 1 – June 14:
Normal synagogue services not your thing? That’s ok, these aren’t your normal services.

  • Join NOAZIM, Mt. Zion’s 20s/30s group, for Soul Food Friday this week  (June 4th). Dinner starts at 7:30 and services follow at about 8:15. Special guest Nathan Scheiner will be leading a Torah discussion about GLBTQ issues and Judaism in preparation for Pride on June 27th and, as always, Eric Rice (of The Cold Open) will share his musical talents. $5 covers dinner and an RSVP to [email protected] helps make sure there’s plenty to eat (none needed if you’re just coming for services). Mt. Zion is on Summit Ave in St. Paul.
  • Hanging out in the park sound like a good way to get closer to G-d or maybe just help you make a few new friends? Join Indie Jews this Saturday (June 5th) for Shabbat in the Park. Bike-friendly and kid-friendly, the program will feature a brief service followed by a vegetarian potluck and plenty of time to schmooze. 10:30 – 12:30 at Boom Island Park in Minneapolis. For more information and to RSVP, contact Carin ([email protected]).

Need to get your schmooze on?

  • Check out the popular Jewish Arts & Culture Showcase at the Acadia Cafe on Tuesday, June 8th. This month’s lineup includes hosts Shon and Cherie Cobbs from Days of Rae, singer/songwriter Matt Kalin, Minnesota Homegrown Hip Hip, The George Marich Group, and Levittrio. 7:30-11:30, free and open to all ages. As creator Matt Levitt says, it’s a good time that “caters to the budgets of Jews in their 20s and 30s (read: free entertainment with drink specials).”
  • Haven’t been to Billy’s on Grand lately? Maybe it’s time. Join the UJFC Young Leadership for happy hour on Thursday, June 10th. Drinking, I mean socializing, commences at 6:30. Supposedly we’ll wrap up around 9, but if the weather is nice, we’ll hang out on the patio longer. And please don’t be shy if you happen to stop by – you won’t be able to miss me: I’ll be the one with the “I’m officially on vacation” grin.
