The Minnesota Jewish Theatre is kicking off its 2010-2011 season with a play that’s gonna shake you up a bit. If you remember feeling torn between the Judaism epitomized in Chaim Potok’s The Chosen, as the book/play/movie pit secular Jew vs Orthodox Jew, wait until you see what playwright Aaron Posner has done with Chaim Potok’s novel My Name is Asher Lev. The play, opening at the Minnesota Jewish Theatre on October 16th, is a coming-of-age story about Judaism, identity and art that scored rave reviews when it opened last year in Philadelphia. The Minnesota Jewish Theatre’s production, running from 10/16 – 11/7, is a regional premiere.
As always, TC Jewfolk has the hook up. We’re giving away a pair of tickets to the show of your choice. Intrigued? Read on for how to win. [Free tickets are no longer available]

So tell me more about this play…

Tell me if this doesn’t sound familiar. Boy loves family. Boy loves [art/theater/politics/business/ other things his parents don’t understand]. Boy struggles, and chooses self over family, to mixed results. It’s the story of your life. It’s the plot line of many of your favorite movies.
The Minnesota Jewish Theatre’s My Name is Asher Lev brings to the stage this struggle between art and tradition and self and family, and it does so in a way that is creative, minimalist and at times even shocking (for example, one woman plays all the woman’s roles – from nude model to mother).  If the Minnesota premiere is anything like the Philly production, it’s definitely worth seeing. And while we’re at it, nu, it’s worth going to support our only Jewish theater. Especially when student rush tix are only $12.

How can I win tickets?

But who needs student rush when you can score free tickets on TC Jewfolk? Want a free pair of tickets to a My Name is Asher Lev performance of your choice?  Answer this question in the comments to this post before Monday, October 11th at 12midnight for your chance to win: First the Scottsboro Boys, then Asher Lev – what’s so special about Minnesotans that we keep getting all these regional premieres of new plays?
There’s no right answer, of course, we’re just looking to have fun with ya. We’ll draw the winner randomly with the help of The Hat. FYI – We’re sharing your email address with the MN Jewish Theatre if you enter to win.
Enjoy the show!
