It’s safe to say that most of us have built up a healthy collection of canvas totes, mostly advertising things we don’t care about at all. We wanted to make something a little more personal, say when we’re headed to the farmer’s market or even a casual hangout with friends, that has some real flair. Check out our easy, DIY “OY” tote. It’s simple and quick and would make a great activity to do with friends or kids.
Here’s how we made our own tote that we’ll be carrying around town. I’m kvelling!
To start, collect your materials: plain canvas tote bag, scissors, painters tape, fabric paint and sponge brushes. All of these items can be found at your local craft store.
We used painters tape to create this geometric “Oy” design and marked the outline of the letters so that we knew where to paint.
Paint the designated area of your tote with the fabric paint. You’ll want to do at least two coats of paint and then let it dry based on the directions of the paints you purchase (we let this dry for about 3 hours). Once the paint is dry, you can carefully pull off the tape. You may have some lines that you’ll want to touch-up at this point.
Oy!
