Job Summary/Description:

B’nai Mitzvah Tutors are assigned students to work with individually as they prepare for becoming B’nai Mitzvah at Bet Shalom Congregation. B’nai Mitzvah tutors work on a part time basis and will work with families to find a mutually agreed upon meeting time for tutoring. Tutoring takes place at Bet Shalom.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to:

*Schedule, prepare for, and guide students through weekly tutoring sessions beginning 10 months prior to each student’s assigned date. (Each student receives 36 sessions of tutoring. 34 30-minute sessions and 2 one hour sessions at the end).

*Support students in their preparation of chanting Torah, Haftarah, and prayers

*Support students in their ongoing understanding of the meaning of their Torah and Haftarah portion

*Support students in their ongoing understanding of what it means to them to become B’nai Mitzvah

*Assign students weekly goals and homework and oversee student progress

*Maintain ongoing communicate with students’ parents regarding progress

*Keep student file up to date and communicate progress with Synagogue leadership

Experience and Qualification Requirements:

*Proficiency in reading, chanting, and teaching Biblical Hebrew with the standard Torah and Haftarah Trope used in the Reform Movement

*Proficiency in reading, chanting, and teaching prayers with the standard melodies used in the Reform Movement

*Strong organization and communication skills

*Ability to relate to young people at a time of significant transition and stress

*Ability to tailor learning to individual student needs
