Sixteen past presidents of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation board of directors sent a letter of support late last week to Israel President Isaac Herzog.
The letter was drafted by past presidents Gil Mann and Beth Kieffer Leonard, and delivered to Herzog by Leonard; the two have a friendship that dates back to their time working together at the Jewish Agency for Israel.
The decision to write the letter came from a conversation of past presidents, and MJF’s overseas committee and executive committee. The letter, which is below, sends encouragement to Herzog as he tries to broker a settlement within Israel’s government over proposed laws that would weaken the judicial branch.
“We are proud to see Israel’s democracy working as millions protest peacefully in Israel,” the letter states. “We send our encouragement (chizuk) to you to continue your work to keep Israel’s democracy strong through dialogue and compromise.”
