Now that’s my kind of Jewish princess.
I’m talking about Stephanie Rothenberg, the NYU-trained actress who grew up in Tennessee and started in showbiz at the age of 8, and is the lead in the Guthrie Theater’s musical theater production “Roman Holiday,” playing now until August 19th on the McGuire Proscenium Stage. She’s also Jewish. Rock on.
The show, a larger-than-life new musical based on the iconic film, featuring the unforgettable tunes of songwriting legend Cole Porter, is a fairytale romance following a young Princess Anne (played by Rothenberg) on a widely publicized European tour where she escapes her official escorts to explore the streets, and, of course, falls in love.
Minnesota Monthly called the show: an “entertaining, light-hearted, makes-you-feel-good evening out in one of the most beautiful places in the Twin Cities”. The Pioneer Press said the music was “lovely” and the play “charming”. The Star Tribune described the show asbuilt with elegance and sophistication”. And most importantly, TC Jewfolk’s reviewer found the show to be a “lovely confection of a romantic jukebox musical” where the “music is beautiful, the songs are gorgeous, the dancing – spectacular.”
