Word is, there’ll be a group happy hour after, too!

“Makom Fridays”
Friday, March 29 — 6:30-8:30 p.m. @ Adath Jeshurun Congregation, Minnetonka. FREE

The only “Makom Friday” of March! “Makom,” the Hebrew word for “space,” reanimates ancient Jewish wisdom for today. Join Adath Jeshurun for Makom Fridays, celebrating Shabbat with new and familiar faces through soulful prayer, delicious food, a space to unwind, and the sweet ruach [energy] of community. All are welcome to this “everybody friendly” event.

While they’re known to have a few gourmet cooks and bakers [and some take-out pros who know how to order], they do ask attendees to bring a dairy or vegetarian dish to share — after all, what better way to break the ice, than to break bread to go with it? Challah, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided, but additional details on what to bring are on the Makom Facebook page & website.

“It’s All About the Dough: Baking Challah with Rabbi Davis”
Sunday, March 31 — 9 a.m. @ Beth El Synagogue, St. Louis Park. FREE

Challah atcha boy any ol’ time you like after this free workshop. Learn the finer points of making challah, courtesy of Hadassah Minneapolis. Email [email protected] for more info.

“A Sabbath for Socialists: Yiddish Children’s Literature Between Sacred and Secular”
Sunday, March 31 — 7:30-9 p.m. @ Darchei Noam, St. Louis Park. FREE

This sounds amazing, and incredibly fascinating: literature for Yiddish speaking children flourished during the early decades of the 20th century — a time of rapid modernization when large numbers of Eastern European Jews became urban and secular. Distinguished authors and pedagogues alike crafted stories, poems and plays to model the politically progressive, ethically engaged values that they hoped to foster in the next generation. Against that backdrop, we nevertheless discern a subgenre of tales that valorized Sabbath observance under adverse circumstances. Examine why such stories flowed from the pens of socialist leaders both Bundist and Zionist—and what they came to signify.

Got a hot tip for April? Reach out and let us know, and we’ll do all we can to Get the Folk Out for ya!
