EXODUS: Because we were Slaves. NCJW’s Response to Trafficking, an event designed to expose the recent surge of sex trafficking, will be held on May 13, at 6 p.m. at Beth El Synagogue. The event will feature three speakers, including Maureen Bausch, CEO of Super Bowl LII (Baseball, right?) and Mall of America; Jeff Bauer, Policy Director for The Family Partnership; and Christine Stark, a writer and visual artist with firsthand experience in sexual exploitation. Wow! Sports, family values and sexual exploitation…all in the same room?! Count me in!
A Three-Hour Tour!
The Mayim Rabim Congregation will be holding a tour of all the Jewy stuff at the Minneapolis Institute of Art on Thursday, May 14. The event begins with dinner at 5:30 at Black Sheep Pizza (sounds like my kinda place!) Following that, guests will meet in front of the MIA at 7 p.m. for a guided tour of the Jewish art on display. While admission for the tour is free and no RSVP is necessary, an e-mail is recommended for the dinner portion. I dunno, folks. You know what you get when you put food and art together. You get fart. And, so…yeah. In case you’re wondering, I do get paid for this. What did YOU do today?!
Scholarly Weekend
It’s that time again, peeps! Beth Jacob congregation will be holding its annual Harold and Mickey (z”l) Smith Scholar-in-Residence weekend, beginning at 7 p.m. on Shabbat (Fri/Sat, May 15/16) and Sunday morning. The scholar on tap is none other than Dr. Benjamin Sommer, a professor of Bible at the Jewish Theological Seminary. His research focuses on the history of Israelite religion, literary analysis of the Bible, and biblical theology. Sounds pretty intense. I’d go, but I’ll be home watching reruns of “Hee-Haw” on my smartphone.

The 2015 Sabes JCC Annual Benefit: Better Together will be held on Sunday, May 17, at 5 p.m, at the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis in the Great Lakes Ballroom. The annual event is designed to increase community awareness and trust. The benefit will also be recognizing community innovator and leader, Steve Lear, as well as other partners. The funds raised support various social services and community needs addressed by the JCC. This year, the focus will be on collaborative community initiatives. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t this the basis for Woodstock?
